Nairobi based Raaji Bharij is all fired up and ready for the opening round of the 2012 KCB Kenyan National Rally Championship. With the new season beginning this weekend in Nyeri it presents a fresh start for Raaji who has had a change of car and co-driver during the off season.

Raaji, who was the 2009 Pirelli Star Drive nominee from Kenya, will be armed with a top specification Mitsubishi Evo 9 from this event onwards. The car, which is a similar specification to that of the past three KNRC champions, has had an extensive rebuild over the past two months. Rajay Sehmi returns to the co-drivers seat to rekindle the successful partnership which saw the pair clinch the Pirelli nomination on their debut rally, the 2009 KCB Safari Rally.

Raaji; I am both excited and a bit anxious about this weekend. The new car is brilliant and such a step up from the trusty Subaru N10. I know we have the pace but to compete at the very top of this sport you need solid financial support and currently we are still in talks with sponsors. We will definitely do our best in Nyeri but I know I'm a bit rusty as I haven't rallied since June, but either way I'm sure we will have a lot of fun!

The Nyeri Rally begins with scrutineering on Saturday morning at the Greenhills Hotel in Nyeri. A 2pm ceremonial start from the KCB Branch will be followed immediately by a super special stage. The rally restarts at 8am on Sunday morning whereby the assembled crews will tackle 14 special stages around Nyeri before the ceremonial finish at the Ruringu Stadium later in the day.

Renault UK signs up for 2012 MSA British Manufacturers Rally Championship

1998 and 1999 British Rally Champions, Renault UK has become the first manufacturer to sign up for the new two wheel drive 2012 MSA British Rally Championship.

With most manufacturers having homologated two wheel drive cars, the British Manufacturer's Rally Championship has been reinstated and allows registered manufacturers and UK importers to vie for the title of becoming British Champion.

The new concept signs up Renault UK to a promotional partnership and whilst manufacturers could still choose to run a works team, for 2012 the two highest placed privateer Renault rally cars will still score top points for the Manufacturer's Championship.

BRC Manager Mark Taylor commented. "It's brilliant news that Renault UK are the first to sign up to the Championship. We recognised the commercial realities currently faced by car manufacturers and their dealerships and specifically created a British Championship to attract UK Importers by reducing the usually barriers and high cost of entry.

"We are providing them with a platform to promote products that relate to what is being sold in the showroom. We are also offering them high quality media products and a chance to engage in rally themed dealer events. Importantly, they will have a stakeholder ship in the future of this world renowned motorsport series."

This decision by Renault to join the manufacturer's championship further proves that the decision to move to two wheel drive was the correct one. With the vast majority of car makes having two wheel drive road-cars, it means the potential for close competition is much greater than before. It also benefits the drivers who score points, as they will gain additional recognition via the association with the marque.

Abbring makes difficult choice for the next step of his rally career.

After winning the French 2wd Gravel championship title last year as well as two S2000 class wins in the Rally GB and Rally the Monte Carlo, Kevin Abbring (23) and codriver Lara Vanneste (21) will not continue as a team. Frederic Miclotte from Belgium will take over.

Of course this was a difficult but important decision for Kevin Abbring.

" This point in my career is probably one of the most important! " Although VW chose me fore their Junior program i do not have a huge WRC experience if you compare to some other youngsters, so there is not a lot of time to adjust.

Together with Lara they were the youngest team in the WRC in Rally GB and Monte Carlo, with which they earned a lot of respect.
So why this choice?. " Despite her young age Lara was already used to rallying. She started her first rally some years ago in a Corolla WRC. She proved her skills with Dominique Bruyneel and Pieter Tsjoen which are good references". Kevin was surprised how quickly she adapted when they did their first rally together in Holland end 2010. Inside the car she is really good, if you imagine to get into a works team this year so quickly you have to be able to adapt very fast and she did. I really thank her for the effort and dedication she showed over the last year and i am shure she will be very succesfull in the future.

" On the other side i have to be honest to myself. Many chances like this will probably not follow soon, so to make the best out of it, everything has to be as good as possible, together with someone who can coach me. This is only possible by means of experience, if you take notice of the available time we have. That is why i chose to team up with Frederic Miclotte".

" This is someone with the ideal combination of age and experience ( 33 WRC events done as well as a lot of other international rally's). This experience he gained with Freddy loix and Dennis Kuipers he is willing to share with me".

As Frederic said; " i am really motivated to help this young driver in the WRC, and i have a lot of confidence that we will make a good team. I feel sorry for Lara at this moment as we also get along very good but that is the way some things happen. I would also like to thank Freddy Loix and Dennis Kuipers for the fantastic time we spend as they were the people who were a big help in my career.
Because of them i have a bag of experience now and i am very much looking forward tot his new adventure ".

Coming weekend Kevin and Frederic will leave to do the recce of Rally Sweden which is a good opportunity to get used to each other. After that Rally Mexico will be their first outing together in the rally car.

Emma Gilmour elected to FIA commission

Leading New Zealand rally driver Emma Gilmour is about to head to Geneva, Switzerland to participate in her first meeting as a member of the Women & Motor Sport Commission, part of the world governing body of motorsport the Federation Internationale de L'Automobile (FIA).

Nominated by MotorSport New Zealand at a meeting of the FIA General Assembly late in 2011, Dunedin-based Gilmour was then elected to the commission that includes representatives from other countries highly-ranked in the motorsport world.

The Women & Motor Sport Commission is headed by former World Rally Championship driver Michèle Mouton and was established by the World Motor Sport Council to facilitate greater participation by women in motorsport. Gilmour will sit alongside the rally icon and her former co-driver Fabrizia Pons, who represents the ACI-CSAI, Italy, and Gilmour's role is to provide a voice from the Asia Pacific region at steering the commission's strategies and policies.

"It is really exciting. I am very grateful to MotorSport New Zealand for thinking of me for the position. It is a great opportunity to be involved with the FIA at such a high level," says Gilmour. "I'm looking forward to it; it will be a very big opportunity to work alongside so many influential, like-minded people."

New Zealander Morrie Chandler, who is a vice president of the FIA and the World Motor Sport Council, says Gilmour's appointment will help enhance New Zealand's position on the world stage which has two major rally sport events – the Brother International Rally of Whangarei and Brother Rally New Zealand – on the 2012 calendar.

"The commission was set up two years ago to give women a direct voice in the planning and development of motorsport from their perspective. It is a real credit to both Emma and New Zealand motor sport that she should be elected to such an influential role and I am sure that her experience will be an asset to the commission.

"Emma has proven she's an equal among men with her consistent rally championship results both in New Zealand and offshore. That makes her a perfect ambassador for women who need proof they can participate at any level and be a leader."

Runner-up in the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship (NZRC) in 2011 and 2010, Gilmour also finished second overall in the 2009 FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC).

For 2012 she and co-driving partner Glenn Macneall intend contesting the Brother International Rally of Whangarei, which is the opening round of the NZRC and APRC, and starts on 30 March. They will also contest Brother Rally of New Zealand, the seventh round of the WRC, which runs from 21 to 24 June and is based in Auckland.

Longford revival back bigger and better with reduced prices

The Longford Revival Festival will be back on March 24 and 25, and organisers are promising an even bigger and better event than when it made its highly successful appearance on the calendar last year.

Ticket sales have now opened, with a raft of new attractions and a reduced entry fee sure to add to the events appeal in its second year.

The Festival, which celebrates the era when the northern Tasmania town hosted the world's biggest names in motorsport back in the 1950s and 1960s, is based on the highly successful Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK.

As well as a range of modern, classic and exotic cars tackling the Flying Mile on the old F1 circuit, live music, local fine food and wine, and a host of children's activities have been design to create a day out for the family.

Daily ticket prices start at $18 for adults, with family passes available for two adults and three children (under 18) from $45. Children under 13 are free if accompanied by a ticketed adult.

A range of ticketing options have been created for the Festival this year, with passes to the Premium Viewing Area offering ultimate spectating of the Flying Mile from new heights will be serviced by a separate enclosure with outdoor seating, bar and toilet facilities. Prices start from $25 for adults.

The event follows a week after the F1 race in Melbourne, with many of the classic cars involved in that event expected to travel to Longford as well.

A new feature of the Festival is the addition of a children's area, perfect for families with little ones who want to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Flying Mile, while ensuring there is plenty to do for their little racers as well. Jumping castles to motorized jeeps and face painting, its design to make the day fun for the whole family.

Festival gates will open at 9.00am and close at 5.00pm on both Saturday March 24 and Sunday March 25.

Rising star Arzeno targets more S2000 action after stunning Rallye Monte-Carlo performance

Mathieu Arzeno is working to secure more rallies in Super 2000 machinery after a top-six stage time signalled his emergence as a star of the future when he made his competitive debut in an S2000 car on Rallye Monte-Carlo recently.

The 24-year-old, whose experience of his SaintEloc Racing Peugeot 207 S2000 prior to the start of the legendary event amounted to a 70-kilometre test, had to display all his ability behind the wheel as changeable weather conditions placed huge demands on crews with the first stage taking place largely in the dry but the second stage containing sections of snow and ice.

Arzeno, from Marseille in France, was 10th fastest on stage one but staggered onlookers by beating several drivers in faster World Rally Cars to the sixth quickest time on stage two with co-driver Renaud Jamoul.

"As we crossed the finish line, both myself and my co-driver breathed a sigh of relief because the conditions were very difficult," said Arzeno. "Just getting to the end of that stage without making mistakes was an achievement. But I was absolutely delighted with my time because I was right up there with the world's top drivers."

Sadly for Arzeno he was denied the opportunity to make more progress in the overall classification when a puncture cost him around 50 seconds on stage three before a broken wheel on stage four led to his retirement.

"It was very disappointing because I was driving at no more than 40kph when my car understeered on pure ice and hit a rock," said Arzeno. "Unfortunately that's Rallye Monte-Carlo and it can be a tough lesson sometimes."

Arzeno is already looking ahead to the rest of the 2012 season when he hopes to tackle more events in a Super 2000 car in addition to building his experience of driving on gravel.

"I don't think that my stage times on Rallye Monte-Carlo went unnoticed, even though to finish first, first you have to finish," said Arzeno. "I hope to drive a Super 2000 car again as soon as possible, because I believe I can put in some good performances with this car. The ideal for me would be in the IRC, or the WRC once more. There's a lot of hard work ahead to find the budget, but I'm completely committed."

Arzeno's programme for the rest of the year will be announced soon.

Ligato to make PWRC return

Marcos Ligato will mount his first Production Car World Rally Championship title challenge since 2006 after it was confirmed that the Argentine has registered for the series for 2012.

The 34-year-old will drive a Subaru Impreza WRX STI for the Italian Top Run Motorsport operation alongside long-term navigator Ruben Garcia.

He will begin his campaign on his home event, Rally Argentina, from 26-29 April and contest the remaining rounds in Greece, New Zealand, Germany, Italy and Spain.

Joint team boss Alfonso Agnello said: "We are very pleased to have Marcos and Ruben back because they are part of the history of our team. It is very important to have a talented pilot with experience of all the rallies in our team. Hopefully we can win the title."

Ligato's Subaru is one of three already under construction at the team's base in Castiglione Olona in northern Italy. An intensive testing programme is planned before Ligato's first appearance of the season in Argentina.

Ligato took part on his first world championship rally in Argentina back in 1998 when he finished 14th overall and third in Group N4. The highlight of his career is undoubtedly his capture of third overall in the PWRC standings in 2005.

Callum Black continues in the fast lane with Millers Oils

Talented young driver, Callum Black, has been selected to receive a year's sponsorship for the second year running, from leading oils and fuel treatments manufacturer Millers Oils.

The deal will see 20-year-old Black provided with Millers Oils' top-of-the-range high-performance products, including its new innovative low-friction Nanodrive range of engine oils. As well as supplying products, Millers Oils will provide full advice and technical expertise throughout the year from its experienced technical team to help Black reach his goal of becoming the youngest ever winner of the British Rally Championship.

The ambitious driver first secured the backing of Millers Oils after impressing as one of the Millers Oils Rising Stars in 2010, Black continued to impress last season with two podium finishes, opening with a third place in the Sunseeker Rally and closing with a fifth place overall in the competitive BRC F2 category, in his fully-branded Millers Oils Suzuki Swift S1600.

Aiming to improve on his second season in the championship, Black said: "Millers Oils has been a terrific help to me over the last two seasons and I'm extremely proud to have been selected for a second season.

Subaru Driver David Higgins Defends Title with Dominating Win at the 2012 Sno*Drift Rally

CHERRY HILL, N.J., Jan. 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Subaru of America, Inc. Defending 2011 Rally America National Champion David Higgins launched his 2012 title defense with Subaru Rally Team USA by achieving a decisive victory this past weekend at the Sno*Drift Rally. Higgins, driving a 5-door 2012 Subaru WRX STI rally car, dominated the rally leading from the start and winning 15 of the event's 24 competitive stages. Higgins finished nearly two minutes clear of his closest rival. The Sno*Drift Rally was not easy by any respect; David's biggest challenge was keeping his STI on the event's treacherously icy roads. Higgins proclaimed the variable and slick road conditions as the toughest rallying he has ever encountered.

The Sno*Drift Rally, round one of the six-event 2012 Rally America National Championship, challenged nearly 70 top rally teams with over 130 miles of snow and ice-covered roads in northern Michigan. Constant changes in weather and road conditions coupled with several stages run in total darkness make this rally notoriously challenging. Drivers will attest that the biggest challenge of the rally is that spiked or studded tires are not allowed, making traction extremely elusive when conditions are icy. Drivers this year were greeted with exactly that; a recent thaw and subsequent freeze turned many of the stage roads into sheets of smooth ice.

Higgins and his co-driver Craig Drew were up for the challenge from the onset and all but sealed their victory with a commanding performance on the first loop of stages where Higgins posted several blisteringly fast stage times while his rivals struggled with the icy conditions. After winning the opening four stages, Higgins had amassed a nearly two-minute lead on his rivals before the first service halt. However, maintaining that lead on the treacherously ice-covered roads was one of the biggest challenges the veteran rally pro Higgins has ever tackled.

"The icy roads combined with lack of spiked tires makes this one of the toughest rallies and a challenge I think that is unique in rallying anywhere in the world," explained Higgins. "Mentally it's very draining, as you are constantly on the edge all weekend with the knowledge that any small mistake could just end the rally. The grip levels would go from variable to non-existent in a flash."

The lead Higgins had amassed on the opening day of competition was only briefly under threat for the first loop of stages on the morning of day-two. Higgins, running on ice tires, encountered fresh snow on the stages allowing his chief rival Antoine L'Estage, who had chosen a snow tire, to claw back some time. After switching to snow tires at the first service, Higgins responded to the threat and won five straight stages to regain nearly all of the time lost in the morning while sealing his victory.

"This was a great victory and a strong result to start our title defense," explained Higgins. "Our Subaru was perfect all weekend and allowed Craig [Drew] and I to just concentrate on the job under these wild conditions."

Added James Han, motorsports marketing manager for Subaru of America, Inc., "David and Craig drove prudently to a tremendous result, and Subaru Rally Team USA prepared a car in our 2012 Subaru WRX STI that has proven to be the class of the field this weekend. Having to constantly assess traction levels under such difficult road conditions within the context of competition driving rapidly takes a mental toll, and our #75 driver pairing truly rose to the occasion and ultimately prevailed."

Female team in World Rally Championships!

Ramona Karlsson and Miriam Walfridsson are ready for PWRC 2012. With their own team Ramona Rallying they will drive a full PWRC season. It will be 6 rallies with start in Mexico in March. Ramona and Miriam will be the first female Swedish team ever who will drive full season in Rally World Championships. – For me this has always been a dream, and it's a really great feeling that we have reached this goal, Ramona Karlsson says. After strong support from our main partners such as Höganäs, Sandå, Mitsubishi etc. we can make this possible, Ramona says.

Ramona is not only just a driver but also a team manager for the own team. She is also the first Swedish female driver who compete in a full Rally World Championship season. Ramona is aware of the high level of competition, but she aims high: – This will be our very first year in the World Championships and it's difficult to set up goals. But we know that Swedish drivers are fast and we think that we have good speed and experience from our national competitions.

-We also have a fantastic and experienced team with our chief mechanic Mikael Gustafsson that gives us 100% support and comfortness through his valuable international experiences. Of course we aim for top positions, you must always aim high. Nothing is impossible, Ramona says.

Ramona Rallyings press conference were very successfull. All the largest newspapers, magazines and TV channels attended the press conference and were very curious and interested in this historical and unique concept.

Ramona has a strong and close cooperation together with her co-driver Miriam Walfridsson and they have worked together the last 5 years – and will continue their positive cooperation also in PWRC. It was an obvious choice for Ramona. – Miriam and I work perfectly together in the car, and there is noone I'd rather have with me. Miriam is young but very experienced and has the same winning instinct and is as goal minded and focused as I am. And we will need that more ever this year.

The KLARIUS Group, world leading OEM parts manufacturer, has pledged it's support to the young, Brecon based, rally driver Sara Williams, for the second year after a fantastic performance in the BTRDA Rally Series, Welsh National Championship and Wales Rally GB in 2011.

The backing cements the support of Klarius, the name behind famous brands such as Quinton Hazell, in the up-and-coming female driver and her assault on a mixed campaign in 2012.

"We did a lot of development work in 2011" said Sara. "Not only on my driving skills but also developing some fantastic parts for Klarius which we could use on the car, whilst keeping it within the GpN regulations.

"It's great to have the guys from Klarius back on board for this year. We had an amazing year and the everyone was really happy with the progress made."

The 2012 campaign will see Sara again concentrating on local events, giving her the most time behind the wheel and gaining the best experience. New for 2012, Sara will be accompanied by experienced navigator Andrew Sankey. The pair sat together on the Cambrian Rally back in 2010 and enjoyed a fantastic result together.

"We're heading in to the Wyedean Forest Rally with an open mind about what this year will bring. We're going to do a championship and we'll register for the REIS-Get Connected! BTRDA Rally Series, Pirelli Welsh National and Welsh Clubman Championship. Ultimately, which one we decide to contest will come down to the results and budget."

That 's right, Bill Bridge and Tim Vezina from the USA, Jose Manuel Ponce from Mexico, and new teammate Ragnar Róbertsson, formula off-road champion from Iceland, return in a new Ultra 4 vehicle built by Bridge to go race the King of the Hammers, the toughest one day off road race in the world. "We will be using the same racing strategy that proved to be successful in the King of the Hammers 2011, along with some new tricks that we have learned from rally racing. Bridge is a fantastic teammate and we get along great, like Pancho and Lefty. Tim and Bridge prepped the rig and know it very well, so having one of them race in the vehicle is a big plus in these type of endurance racing. Ragnar Róbertsson will add his Scandinavian formula off road expertise to push the team to finish. We just need to pre run, which we have never done before for this race, we believe that is the key to finishing in the top 20 and avoiding traffic in the rock sections" Ponce says. Bill Bridge and his wife Kristen, and Tim Vezina of Inviscid Motorsports plan to race the Ultra 4 2012 series, while Ponce will go into rally mode and concentrate on racing a Rally America USA event and some Norwegian regional rallies for the rest of the year. But their main goals for the future are to participate and finish a Score Baja race and the Dakar in 2013. Planning for these future endurance races have already begun and the Mexican American multi platform racing team is very excited to take on these new challenges.

Yokohama to become the control tyre for ITCC for 2012

The UK distributor for Yokohama tyres, Yokohama HPT Ltd, is proud to announce that as of 2012 it will be the new control tyre for one of the most exciting motorsports in Ireland - the Irish Touring Car Championship or ITCC.

The Accolades Keep Coming for Breen

A week after claiming his maiden SWRC win on Rallye Monte Carlo, Craig Breen returned home to two more awards for his achievements. Nationally in Ireland, Craig was named 'Sports Person of the Week' by the Irish Independent (Newspaper) for his SWRC win on Rallye Monte Carlo at the wheel of his Ford Fiesta S2000 and in his native Waterford, Craig was announced as the Quarter Four, finalist for the 'Waterford Person of the Year, 2011' for his amazing victory of the inaugural FIA WRC Academy (Ford Fiesta R2).

On being selected for the award from the Irish Independent, Craig said, "Being chosen by such an esteemed national paper as the Irish Independent is a great honor. This again shows how much rallying has come to the fore in Ireland. Motorsport is still a minority sport in the Country but in association with Motorsport Ireland, there's a strong network of Motorsport clubs stretching from Cork to Donegal and an even stronger group of passionate members of those clubs. The exposure that comes from my success I hope helps in some small way."

On Saturday evening (January 28) at The Tower Hotel, Waterford City, surrounded by family and friends, the rally driver who turns twenty-two on Thursday (2-Feb) was flattered to be recognised, "I'm delighted to receive this award; it's fantastic to know that the people of Waterford are behind me. I love every minute of my job and being presented with awards for that is especially great. I'd like to thank everyone who nominated me, winning this type of an award is extra special because it shows that motorsport and particularly rallying is becoming more well-known. I've received incredible coverage over the passed three years from both the local newspapers and radio, this has proved vital not only to my own P.R. but to the exposure of rallying, which is a minority sport here in Ireland."

In presenting the award, Tower Hotel Deputy Manager, Catherina Dempsey commented, "We are thrilled to present the award to Craig; he is a fantastic role model and inspiration to everyone. What Craig has achieved so far at just the early stages of his career is really outstanding and richly deserving in commendation and it is clear that through this public nomination process the citizens of Waterford are very proud to claim Craig as a great Waterford ambassador."

The four finalists of the 2011 Waterford Person of the Year Awards will now go head to head in a public vote for the overall 'Waterford Person of the Year 2011' to be announced on February 19 at The Tower Hotel Waterford.

One of Waterford's favourite former County hurlers, Ken McGrath was named quarter one winner of the Waterford Person of the Year Awards 2011. Ken was nominated by the public for his valuable contribution to the game since and his presence as a role model for the young Deise hurlers.

In quarter two Chairman of Waterford Tall Ships Race event Des Whelan was named as the 2011 quarter 2 finalist. Des was nominated by the public for his huge voluntary contribution to the event over the last two years.

Eamonn McEneaney was announced as the Quarter three finalist for the Waterford Person of the Year Awards 2011, Eamon is the Curator of the Waterford Museum of Treasures and Bishops Palace, the key driver of the Viking Triangle and the building of the Viking Long Ship are just some of the many projects Eamonn is behind. Eamonn was nominated through the public voting system for his hard work and dedication to the history of Waterford and to the growth of its tourism sector.

Sterckx Rally Sport Team Scores Podium at Sno*Drift Rally

David Sterckx (Belgium) and Karen Jankowski (California) of David Sterckx Rally Sport Team, in their first event of the Rally America 2012 season, finished on the podium with 3rd in the super Production Class and 8th overall at Sno*Drift Rally over the weekend.

This was the first time David had ever competed in the ice and snow. With over 60 cars competing in the event and a high rate of finishers, it was a very competitive event. The weather made it very difficult all weekend with below freezing temperatures, ice, and on the last day several inches of snow.

"I am so happy with our results this weekend, especially for our partners AlphaSTAR, Genoa 5, and MCQ Composites. Our new Subaru was just finished and I drove it for the first time this week" stated David. "Having never rallied on the ice or snow I wasn't totally sure what to expect. Turns out you can't expect anything because the heavy ice and snow this weekend made the conditions very difficult to plan for. I know we will be even quicker next year though because we learned a lot of valuable information that will really help."

The team's crew chief Don Jankowski, who himself has had class wins at Sno*Drift rally in the past, did an amazing job building the new rally car in such a short amount of time. The car was completed Tuesday night with testing the following morning. With very little sleep and the tenacity to press on regardless he and Ken Nowak made sure the car was ready in time.

"If you look at all that we have overcome; finishing our brand new Subaru the night before testing, David never had rallied in the ice or snow, and this being his first National Rally America event I feel that the entire team did an outstanding job" explained Karen. Don and Ken building such a great car, all the tremendous help we received right before the event from Pete Gladys, the beautiful new car wrap Zach Thompson of Competition Graphics provided us, and awesome our crew of Andrea Nowak and Brett Duncan. Rallying is all about teamwork and we are so fortunate to have a great team. David drove consistently fast all weekend!"

Next event in the Super Production Rally America Championship is only one month away at the Rally in the 100 Acre Woods in Salem, MO February 24-25th (http://www.100aw.org/ ).

ABS drama puts Quinn and Tillett out of Targa Wrest Point

Tony Quinn and Naomi Tillet's Targa Wrest Point challenge has ended on the second competitive stage, after a braking problem put their V.I.P. Petfoods Nissan GT-R R35 off the road.

The 390kW all-wheel drive supercar's ABS partially failed on the approach to a corner on the 22.9km Airwalk 1 stage, causing a front brake to lock .

"The sensor on the front left wheel failed, which locked the brake for about 30 metres," Quinn said. "The car pulled left and slid off the road at something like 80km/h.

"At first I thought we'd get away with just a few scratches, because there was a clearing with what looked like small bushes where we went off.

"But there was a small tree in amongst them – it made a quite mess of the side of the car."

Although the Queensland-based Scot and his Adelaide navigator were able to regain the bitumen and complete the stage, they incurred a 20-minute penalty for failing to complete the next stage while running repairs were made to the battered machine.

The penalty put the V.I.P. Petfoods team out of contention in the two-day Hobart event, but Quinn and Tillett drove Saturday's remaining stages to gain practice mileage for April's Targa Tasmania, which will incorporate the same roads.

They intended to continue the extended practice session today, but retired after four of the seven stages when the 2011 model GT-R's transmission began behaving irregularly.

"We kept going even though we didn't have any chance in the event, because there were some things we wanted to test before Targa Tasmania," Quinn said.

"This was only our second event in the new car, and it has quite a few things that are different compared to the 2009 model we ran most of last year.

"It was going okay after we changed the sensor and took off the broken bits and pieces, but we hit a pothole on Cygnet 1, and that did something to the transmission.

"There was nothing at stake, so I decided to stop rather than destroy a $40,000 gearbox."

The event was won by Jason and John White in a Lamborghini, with Matt and Casey Close second in an Audi TT RS, and Brendon Reeves-Rhiannon Smyth third in a Mazda RX8.

The V.I.P. Petfoods team's next tarmac rally is Targa Bambina in New Zealand from March 17-18.

"If you look at my record, you will see the FA Cup is important for me. If you look at the record of all the other teams, I think our record is better than all of them over the past 15 years.

“You can see in training that Robbie loves it and wants to be involved all the time. It’s infectious.

“I had Gordon in this week for lunch and to observe training. He had Robbie at Coventry and he said Robbie’s movement was terrific.

“Gordon said Robbie was making the same kind of movements now that he did when he was 20.

“He said that he was trying to teach that movement to other strikers at Coventry like Darren Huckerby, who did well for him, but it was difficult for them to make the movement that Robbie did.

“And Gordon said he used to ask Robbie ‘who taught you that kind of movement?’ and Robbie told him it was all done playing in the streets.

“He was laying the ball off and spinning and that kind of stuff. It was all stuff he did as a boy playing street football.

“It is a measure of how much he has made himself a very good footballer.”

“His parent club is LA Galaxy and there is an agreement in place.

“We said if Robbie could come and give everyone a boost, get a couple of goals, if he can make a significant difference in the other games, then that would be great.

“Hopefully it inspires everyone else to give tremendous performances and leave us in a good position going into the tail-end of the campaign.”

MONTE MAGIC WOWS THOUSANDS AT CLYDEBANK

Clydebank was touched by Monte magic yesterday as over 70 cars spanning six decades wowed the thousands at the start of the 2012 Monte Carlo Classic Rally.

Glamorous cars including Lancias, Triumphs and Porsches left the start ramp at Clydebank College, formerly the site of the famous John Brown shipyard.

West Dunbartonshire Provost Denis Agnew flagged the cars away on their 2000 mile epic to Monte Carlo which will take almost 30 hours of non-stop driving.

The first car over the ramp was a 1979 Fiat driven by Nicola Parolin, with Andrew McAlpine being the first UK driver in a Lancia Fulvia.

The 51 year old Director of the Sir Robert McAlpine building company worked at the John Brown shipyard in his twenties and admitted returning for the Monte was 'emotional'.

"It is fantastic to be back here and the turn-out has been amazing," he said, reflecting on the huge crowds of families gathered in the shadow of the Titan Crane.

"This is one of the few events in the world which is a true adventure. It is a personal challenge. You have something different at every corner. You have night and day, fog, ice and rain and more black ice.

"Coming back here is really quite emotional for me. One hundred and thirty years ago, my great, great grandfather built the Singer sewing machine factory so my family have a lot of connections to the area.

"My goal now is to finish the rally and reach Monte Carlo."

West Dunbartonshire Council pulled off a major coup by landing the hosting rights of the rally, regarded as one of the most famous motorsport events in the world.

A total of 306 cars are competing in this year's Monte Carlo Classic Rally, with the other start points being Barcelona, Oslo, Warsaw, Turin and Reims.

The cars that set off yesterday from Clydebank will arrive in Calais this morning and will then head south and up over the snow-capped French Alps.

Following the traditional concentration runs in the mountains, the cars will finally- if successful- reach the sunshine Principality of Monte Carlo on Tuesday.

West Dunbartonshire Provost Denis Agnew believes the Monte will have boosted the area's potential for bringing major international events to the banks of the Clyde.

"I would love to see this come back here. In fact, I would have it here every year if I could," he said.

"Seeing these thousands of people and the great cars, this is what it is all about. I actually invited Sir Jackie Stewart and he phoned back my office and said he would definitely have been here, had he not been in America. He felt it was that important.

"So many people have worked on this and made it happen. Everyone should now share in the success of it."

All cars leaving Clydebank yesterday were built between 1955 and 1980.

The winner of the first Monte was Parisian Henri Rougier in a 25 horse power Turcat-Mery.

DAVID HIGGINS WINS SLIPPERY SNO*DRIFT RALLY

January 29, 2012 (Lewiston, MI) -- Ice-covered roads were the story at the 38th annual running of the Sno*Drift Rally, the kick-off event to the 2012 Rally America National Championship, but it was Subaru Rally Team USA's David Higgins and Craig Drew who managed the extreme conditions to take the overall win. Higgins and Drew are the reigning 2011 national champions, and they took the first step towards defending their title in the six-round 2012 Rally America National Championship by winning 15 out of 24 stages.

"This is a good win," said Higgins, "The conditions were the most treacherous I have ever seen."

Higgins finished the event 1:49.9 ahead of Rockstar Energy Drink's Antoine L'Estage and Nathalie Richard. The Rockstar team never held the lead but they made considerable time on Higgins on the first leg of day 2 and looked like they would get closer to challenging the Subaru driver.

"We chose to use snow tires at the start of the day," said L'Estage, "versus Higgins' ice tires. We just gambled right and were making up good time until after the first service."

Last year, Sno*Drift winners Travis and Terry Hanson made rally history by becoming the first Super Production (SP) team to win an overall event. This year the son and father duo took third overall for a consecutive Sno*Drift podium and secured the SP Class win in dominant fashion. The finish was all but miraculous as the team didn't expect to complete the event due to engine problems before the second day began. Due to the sound of their engine, itappeared it could break at anytime. The team fought through the mechanical issues, however, and managed a highly respectable podium spot while continuing to prove the competiveness of the Super Production Class as a viable contender to the more powerful Open Class cars.

The SP battle for second and third place was fairly close considering that the icy Sno*Drift conditions spread the field to greater-than-usual lengths. Lauchlin O'Sullivan and Scott Putnam, piloting an unfamiliar Mitsubishi EVO, held a 45.8 second advantage over newcomer driver David Sterckx and co-driver Karen Jankowski.

The Sno*Drift Rally is David Sterckx's first Rally America National Championship event. Sterckx is a former 2001 Belgium Rally Group N DR2 Champ and has been preparing for his first national event since last year.

In the 2-Wheel Drive (2WD) Class, Chris Duplessis and Karl Atkinson once again topped the 2WD field in their 2011 Ford Fiesta R2 winning all the stages in class and consistently placed within the top 10 overall. His performance netted him the Sno*Attack title, a championship for 2WD cars run in conjunction with the Sno*Drift Rally.

Even though they didn't win, it was the inspired drive of Andrew Comrie-Picard with Jeremy Wimpey in a 2011 Scion xD that caused plenty of buzz among the crowd. Comrie-Picard quickly adapted to the new car, having been down as far as 5th in class early in the event to place 2nd in 2WD, narrowly beating Dillon Van Way and Jake Blattner in their 2011 Ford Fiesta by 21 seconds.

A record breaking 65 teams started the Sno*Drift Rally with a slew of new competitors making a big splash. Notably, Canadian Rally Championship regulars Leonid Urlichich and Carl Williamson entered Sno*Drift for their first U.S. event and instantly challenged Travis and Terry Hanson for third place overall, trading times throughout the event. At one point, Hanson passed Urlichich on stage only to give up the spot deep into Day 2. Urlichich did finish third overall in the standings, but the car failed post rally inspection and was penalized three positions to finish sixth overall.

Urlichich protested the Steward's decision and the Sno*Drift overall results will remain provisional pending the outcome of the protest.

Erik Zenz and Dave Parps successfully swept the top spot at the Sno*Regional and Drift Regional Rallies in their 1988 Mazda 323.

The Sno*Drift Rally was streamed online for the first time in event history. The video stream brought snowy-stage rally action, driver interviews and analysis by Rally America host, Matthew Johnson. Camera crews used night vision technologies to give fans a never-before-seen glimpse of the late evening stages. 41 countries tuned in to view the broadcast on http://www.rally-america.com.

Next in the 2012 Rally America National Championship is the Rally in the 100 Acre Wood on February 24-25th in Salem, MO.

Reeves rewards Mazda with podium place at Targa Wrest Point

Twenty-three year old Victorian rally driver, Brendan Reeves, has finished a superb third outright in this year's Targa Wrest Point tarmac rally in Tasmania. Reeves, with his co-driving sister Rhianon Smyth alongside, drove an excellent race in his first ever outing in the Mazda Motorsport RX8.

The two-day rally consisted of seven stages on both Saturday and Sunday, covering over 200 kilometres of competitive driving. Reeves came to grips with the car early on Saturday and quickly set about stamping his mark on the rally. He consistently set top four stage times throughout the first day of competition, setting a fastest stage time and two second-fastest stages times in the process. He ended Leg 1 in third place.

Competition in the Modern Category, in which Reeves was competing, was hot. Tasmanian Jason White in a Lamborghini Gallardo and Matt Close in an Audi TT RS led the field at the end of day one but Reeves was determined just to drive his own race on Leg 2 with a top three finish on the agenda. With high temperatures forecast, the focus was on preserving the RX8's tyres and getting the car home in one piece.

Reeves didn't put a foot wrong all day - he again consistently set top four stage times and by the end of Leg 2 had increased his overall margin to fourth placed Jim Richards, (Porsche GT2 RS), to over a minute.

A delighted Reeves was rapt with the weekend's result and happy to get his 2012 season off to a fine start.

"We've had a fantastic weekend," he said. "The car was great, Rhianon did a great job, as did all the Mazda team. I am really happy to reward their hard work with a podium place.

"The RX8 was a dream to drive," he added. "It ran perfectly all weekend and I really enjoyed driving it. I can't wait for Targa Tasmania in April!"

Reeves' Mazda Motorsport team-mates, Simon and Sue Evans, won the Showroom Category in their Mazda 3 MPS, topping off a great weekend for the team. The next outing for the Mazda Motorsport Team is Targa Tasmania, a six-day event to be held in April.

In the meantime, the focus for Reeves and Smyth will turn to raising sufficient funds to compete in the 2012 World Rally Championship Academy. With only two weeks until entries for the highly regarded Series have to be lodged, the race is on for the young Aussie team to secure enough sponsorship to again enter the Series. They competed in the WRC Academy in 2011, finishing fifth outright, in a fully-sponsored drive made possible by winning the 2010 Pirelli Star Driver competition. With Reeves' proven ability on both tarmac and gravel events, sponsors are sure to gain plenty of exposure from their association with the young driving star.

A dominant drive on day two has seen Tasmanian driver Jason White take back-to-back victories in Targa Wrest Point, extending his lead in the CAMS Australian Targa Championship to 60 points with just one round remaining.

White, who also took his Lamborghini Gallardo to top points at the opening round of the series, Targa High Country in November, started the final day with an eight second deficit to Matt Close's Audi TT RS. But victory on six of the day's seven stages gave him and co-driver John White a commanding 41-second victory.

Close took his first podium of the series to move to second place on the leader board with 440 points. White sits on top with the maximum possible score of 500 points.

Mazda driver, Brendan Reeves, took third place at Targa Wrest Point in his first outing in the factory-backed RX8 SP, while Targa legend Jim Richards was fourth in his Porsche 911 GT2 RS.

Tasmanian drivers dominated the round of the national championship. Launceston's David Cooper produced a brilliant drive to win the Classic Outright competition in his 1977 Holden Torana A9X, while Hobart's Eddie Maguire took a surprise victory in the highly competitive TMR Performance 4WD Showroom category.

Hobart's Matthew Rickards was one of the sensations of the event in his 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer, winning the Early Modern class and finishing as the fourth fastest car in the event – more than half a minute ahead of Jim Richards' Porsche on overall times.

The final day of Targa Wrest Point was held in almost perfect conditions, with fine weather and a temperature nudging 30 degrees. While this was great for fans lining the route, it made it hot work for the drivers.

White seemed unaffected. He beat Close by 16 seconds on the opening stage and then gradually extended his lead.

"It was extreme pressure out there, because we knew Closey was going really fast. All we could do was go ballistic and hope for the best, and I think the stage records on the last three stages of the day will stand for a long time because we've got no intentions whatsoever of going any faster than that again," White said.

"On the last stage we scared every single guide post, bank and gum tree. There was not an ounce of road left and it was 100 per cent everywhere through the stage. It was a pretty rewarding drive.

"The lead in the championship is great going into Targa Tasmania, and as far as the development of the car goes it hasn't missed a beat, so we'll go right over it before the next event and pray that our reliability continues, because with over 600 kilometres of stages it's going to be one of the most extreme challenges we've ever set out to accomplish."

Despite dropping to second place, Close was thrilled with his result in a car that is getting faster at every event. The result leaves him well within striking distance of White, with 500 points still on offer in the final round of the CAMS Australian Targa Championship.

Mazda's Brendan Reeves drove conservatively into third place on his first event in the powerful rear-wheel drive car. With a gap to second place, and one back to fourth, he maintained his position throughout the day to take his best outright finish in a Targa event.

After the Ford Capris of George Miedecke (accident) and Donn Todd (fuel problems) struck trouble, David Cooper took the Classic Outright win by nearly a minute and a half over John Ireland's Porsche, which also won the Late Classic Handicap class.

Todd recovered some ground on day two to finish third and gain valuable championship points to take a 200 point buffer into April's Targa Tasmania.

Simon Evans was the dominant driver in the Showroom class, taking a six minute win in his Mazda3 MPS, Eddie Maguire (Mitsubishi Lancer) won 4WD Showroom, while yet another local, Geoff Duggan, was at the head of the pack in the Early Classic Handicap class, driving his 1969 Datsun 2000 Sports.

John Ireland and Michael Ribot have taken top honours in the Late Classic handicap event. The pair, driving a 1977 Porsche 911 Carrera 3 have finished 27 seconds clear of the Stuarts, Paul and Lachie, in their 1973 Porsche Carrera RS.

The final round of the CAMS Australian Targa Championship is the gruelling Targa Tasmania, which takes place from April 17 to 22.

Friday nights just got a whole lot better for British rally fans, with Special Stage confirming their television line-up for Motors TV.

Promising over 36 shows throughout 2012, the guys and gals at Special Stage have their work cut out. They've already confirmed they'll be covering the REIS-Get Connected! BTRDA Rally Series and MSA Asphalt Championship, but have announced further events which they'll televise throughout 2012.

2012 ushered in not only a New Year but a lot of other new things for Cockermouth rally driver, Richard Barnard, and his RABrallyesport team.

A new rally car has been purchased for 2012, another Subaru Impreza, but this time a more modern version with many more modifications and power, hopefully allowing Richard to achieve some even better results than last year. The car, an Impreza N8, was built in the first place in Ireland by McKinstry Motorsport but more recently was run by a Borders based rally team in Duns.

The second new element to the team for this year is that the car will now be serviced and maintained by Malcolm Irving at his Irving Motor Services business in Brigham. Malcolm brings a wealth of rallying and Subaru experience having worked in the past for Prodrive when they ran the Subaru World Rally Team.

But the main news is that new sponsors names will be appearing on the car with Lily & Co from the Market Place in Cockermouth being the teams main sponsor for 2012 and Scruffy Dog Media of Cleator Moor and Tim Perks Training from Louth being the teams support sponsors continuing their involvement from 2011. Opie Oils will again provide the teams oils and lubricants and John Gray at Support-4-U in Lamplugh will look after the team website for the year.

Dawn Balmer, owner of Lily & Co, said ' This is an exiting new venture for us having never been linked to motorsport in the past. In fact the only horsepower we have connections with is our own four legged version. We are looking forward to the year and hope that Richard can achieve continued success on the back of his winning the regional junior rally drivers title last year.'

After a local testing day the team will head for the Isle of Man for the Chris Kelly Memorial Rally on the 17th and 18th February. For one person in the Cockermouth team things most certainly won't be new and that's Richards' co-driving father, Andy Barnard, who on the Isle of Man event will chalk up his 150th rally. Andy started his rallying back in 1971 doing club navigational rallies in the south of England and over the years has competed at all levels from international rallies to local club events throughout England , Scotland and Wales.

The programme in 2012 for the Cockermouth team will be used as a stepping stone to Richard competing on the British Asphalt Rally Championship in 2013.

Matt close to maiden Targa victory

Victorian driver Matt Close could be on his way to his first Targa victory after finishing day one of Targa Wrest Point at the head of the leaderboard.

Driving his Audi TT RS, Close and his co-driving wife, Casey, had a largely troublefree day to finish eight seconds clear of pre-race favourite, Jason White, in his Lamborghini Gallardo, with young gun Brendan Reeves in a Mazda RX8 SP third, a further 17 seconds further back in the modern competition.

It was a day of drama in the two-day Hobart-based event, which is round three of the CAMS Australian Targa Championship.

The early leaders in both the Classic Outright and 4WD Showroom competition, George Miedecke (Ford Capri Perana) and Ric Shaw (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X), crashed out within a stage of each other, despite conditions being perfect for tarmac rallying.

Miedecke and Ralph Norton both finished in the Huon River after missing a corner on the day's fourth stage, Esperence Coast.

In fine and sunny conditions, the 120 cars contested seven tarmac stages covering a distance of over 121 competitive kilometres.

Close knows White is still a real threat with over 80 competitive kilometres remaining but is determined not to succumb to the pressure that is sure to mount across the final stages.

"We had a really good day," a delighted Close said.

"We've been working on a few things on the car since Targa High Country and we're really happy with the way it's worked out - the car started doing the things we wanted it to do.

"You know, the road up to Tahune is really tough on the car and doesn't suit it, but we showed people what it could do on the Esperence Coast stage where the terrain suited it better.

"We didn't look at the results all day and that's exactly the same approach we'll take tomorrow. If we're good enough at the end to get on the podium, that will be a fantastic result for us."

After Miedecke's accident into the Huon River, championship leader Donn Todd surged ahead in the Classic competition, but he too dropped time on the last stage, leaving Launceston's David Cooper in the lead in his 1977 Torana A9X.

One of the stars of the day was Matthew Rickards in his 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 7 who leads the Early Modern class and set the fourth fastest time overall.

Subaru Rally Team USA Chooses PIAA as Lighting Partner for 2012

(January 27, 2012) Subaru Rally Team USA announced today that PIAA will join the team as an official equipment supplier for the 2012 season. PIAA will supply the team with powerful HID driving lights for use on defending Rally America Champion David Higgins' 2012 Subaru WRX STI rally car. The team will begin utilizing the latest HID competition driving lights from PIAA this weekend at the 2012 Sno*Drift Rally, round one of the 2012 Rally America National Championship, where over a third of the rally is run at night on icy forest roads in northern Michigan.

PIAA remains the recognized leader in the manufacturing of innovative high performance automotive lighting and aftermarket products for decades. PIAA will supply Subaru Rally Team USA with powerful HID lights that are fitted to the team car for night rallying and will supply the team with PIAA Super Silicone Wiper blades.

Subaru Rally Team USA will begin the 2012 Rally America National Championship at the season opener Sno*Drift Rally in northern Michigan, Jan. 27 and 28 against a stacked field of over 70 entries. The Sno*Drift Rally features over 130 miles of snow and ice-covered roads in northern Michigan. Constantly changing weather and road conditions coupled with many stages run under total darkness make this rally extremely challenging. Rally America rules also prohibit the use of spiked or studded ice tires at Sno*Drift, placing a premium on road traction.

The Subaru WRX STI of team driver David Higgins will cut through the darkness of Sno*Drift's night stages with the help of between four and six PIAA Racing Series HID lamps housed in carbon fiber light pods mounted to the hood and front bumper. The PIAA Racing Series HID lamp is a competition-specification driving light used by top rally and race teams across the world including PIAA partners in the World Rally Championship, Dakar, Grand Am Racing and Le Mans Series.

Subaru Rally Team USA will be looking for another banner year from team driver David Higgins, who joined Subaru Rally Team USA at the start of the 2011 season. Higgins' impressive 2011 season at the wheel of his Subaru WRX STI included winning the Rally America National Championship, claiming victory and a new record time at the famed Mt. Washington Hillclimb and earning a Bronze at the ESPN X Games SuperRally event. The 2011 Rally America driver's title was the fifth in the last six years for Subaru Rally Team USA drivers in the Rally America Championship (2006-2009, 2011).

Spurs booked their spot in the FA Cup 5th round by edging Championship side Watford.

Despite a slow start, Tottenham would lead at halftime on a 43rd minute Rafael Van der Vaart goal. Spurs caught Watford on the counterattack and Van der Vaart scored with a shot outside the box.

Watford would get several chances in the second half but were unable to convert any of them. Tottenham nearly doubled their lead with a Van der Vaart shot that was denied by the crossbar. Overall, there were 16 shots on goal combined and eight saves from Tottenham’s Carlo Cudicini.

Tottenham will learn their 5th round opponent in a few days. Watford returns to the Championship against Millwall on Tuesday while Spurs face Wigan in the EPL.

Fulham had a great start with a 14th minute Danny Murphy goal to make it 0-1. Murphy converted a penalty kick after Everton’s John Heitinga was given a yellow card for a hadnball inside the box. The lead would only last about 13 minutes as Denis Stracqualursi leveled in the 27th minute. Stracqualursi scored on a header from a Landon Donovan cross.

The momentum continued for Everton as Donovan would assist on the second goal. He sent a cross to Marouane Fellaini in the 73rd minute. The Belgian headed it into the back of the net to make it 2-1. Fulham failed to create many good chances in the final 18 minutes as Everton advance.

Both teams return to the EPL next week as Fulham face West Brom and Everton host Manchester City.

MSP Shona Robison yesterday (fri) took a drive in one of the classic cars participating in the Monte Carlo Classic Rally tomorrow in Clydebank (Sun), admitting the event will bring a major 'sparkle' boost to Scotland.

The Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport was at Knockhill Racing Circuit as some of the competitors in the world famous rally underwent a final test.

As well as flagging the pre-1980 collection of Triumphs, Porsches and Imps off the starting grid, she also enjoyed a circuit of the Fife track.

With thousands expected to throng the Clydebank College Start tomorrow to wave the drivers off, the Minster believes the area's economy and Scotland's reputation will benefit.

The cars will travel 2000 miles, crossing the English Channel and climbing the snow-capped French Alps before emerging into the sunshine of Monte Carlo.

"The rally brings a bit of sparkle at a time when the major events scene in Scotland is in a lull before Spring and Summer. People are really drawn to the nostalgia and it is great that Scotland is a part of it," she said.

"It will bring a lot of benefit for the Clydebank economy and a lot of symbolism, too.

"I find it really pleasing that the benefit is being spread around Scotland.

"Having international visitors and competitors coming here helps in terms of the money spent, but also in terms of the promotion of the country. The images are shown internationally and that has a huge value in terms of bringing people back here to visit and do business."

This year's rally start is a partnership between the Scottish Monte Start Committee and West Dunbartonshire Council, who secured the hosting rights from Automobile Club de Monaco, the French organisers.

Under the rules, classic cars from the period 1955 to 1980 set out for Monte Carlo from start points all over Europe which are roughly equidistant from the finish line.

The other start venues this year are Barcelona, Oslo, Turin, Warsaw and Reims.

Spectators heading to Clydebank will be treated to a Monte Carlo Show, featuring period cars, music and a parade from the era depicted in the famous film, 'Monte Carlo or Bust'.

West Dunbartonshire Provost Denis Agnew said: "It is a great event; a worldwide event and I am really pleased it is starting in Clydebank on a historic site. Something as classic as the Monte Carlo Classic Rally beginning in such a historic place has a great synergy.

"It is fantastic that the Minister, Shona Robison, is supporting it as well."

Last year's rally start in Glasgow attracted 6000 spectators and netted over £1 million for the Scottish economy.

The new rally season is set to open in North America this weekend at the Sno*Drift Rally in Atlanta, Michigan. Two past American champions Wednesday talked about the new season and their expectations and plans for the 2012 campaign on Tech House & Speed, NASCAR Free Radio.

L'Estage won the North American title each of the last two seasons. He was American champion in 2010 and Canadian champion in 2010 and 2011. He's arguably the fastest rally driver in North America. This season he'll start with a new car and new sponsor. He talked about both after a cardio workout to get ready for the season this weekend. He also talked about his growing rivalry with Subaru Rally Team USA driver David Higgins who beat L'Estage by five points for the title last year. Chris Duplessis was America's 2WD champion in 2008 and 2010. This year he'll start the year with the Ford Fiesta R2 he built from a kit last Fall. That car won the Mt. Duplessis was out testing the car for several days two weeks ago and found it in perfect condition to start the year. He also talked about a new Fiesta R2 on the work bench. Motorsport Official and Club Receive Prestigious Motorsport Awards

Northern Ireland motorsport official Barry O'Neill has again been honoured for the second time, for his continuous work behind the scenes and on the ground as a voluntary motorsport official. The MSA UK nominated him for an Official FIA Award with each worldwide governing body nominating their top official. This the first time that the FIA has ever presented such an Award and it is now believed that this will become an annual award.

Barry collected his FIA Outstanding Official of the Year award at the prestigious Night of Champions ceremony on Friday 20 January at the RAC Club in London. FIA Deputy President for Sport, Graham Stoker, presented O'Neill with his award in front of a 150-strong audience of distinguished guests, including all of the 2011 British motor sport champions.

O'Neill commented " Its was a fantastic achievement. I can't believe that I was nominated and that someone from N.I can stand out from the rest of the world. It's a great for motorsport in N.I and this award it evident of the talent N.I has."
In 2010 O'Neill was awarded the 'JLT MSA Marshal of the Year Award' after being nominated by ANICC. This was based on his professional approach to motorsport, training, marshalling which was evident in performing the role of Chief Marshal for the Ulster Rally in 2009 & 2010.

O'Neill is also one of the leading lights behind MMP after starting his involvement in 2006 as an advisor after been trained as an MSA Instructor trainer. In 2011 I progressed to Leader Instructor Trainer and trained 4 new instructor trainers to assist me to expand training opportunities. This progressed into redeveloping the MMP quarterly newsletter in 2008 from a two page newsletter to a more professional four page newsletter and in 2012 an annual 'evergreen' 15-20 page newsletter. This newsletter provide facts and information detailing events, a tool for clubs to promote their events and to keep volunteers informed of important training events etc.In 2011 he became Vice-Chair in preparation for Chair's position in 2012.

The good news continues as Omagh Motor Club has this year been named the 2011" JLT MSA Club of the Year" by the MSA. The Awards Panel selected Omagh MC as the winner following its nomination by the Association of Northern Ireland Car Clubs. The award is designed to recognise excellence among the MSA's registered clubs, which number almost 750. Those that enter are judged in areas such as marketing and promotion, initiatives to attract and retain volunteer officials and young members, and projects that improve road safety or benefit local communities.

Omagh Motor Club has approximately 250 members and ran Autotests, Navigational and Stage Rallies and a Hill Climb in 2011, its 75th Anniversary year. The club has gained strong promotional coverage in its local and regional press and has engaged well with councillors and the Northern Ireland Assembly. It is also a founder member of the highly successful Motorsport Marshalling Partnership in Northern Ireland and attended this year's Omagh Motor Show in a bid to recruit new marshals.

The club organised a championship Autotest event in support of this year's National Motorsport Week and has a range of development programmes and initiatives to train and mentor younger event officials. It also engaged successfully with a cross section of local charities last year and was ranked 'Club of the Year' at the Ulster Herald's Sports Personality Awards.
Omagh MC's Gary Milligan said: "We are delighted to receive this award. We strive to run competitor-friendly events and to encourage young people into the sport. The award is a reflection of the hard work put in by all our volunteers and is particularly welcome as we have just celebrated our 75th anniversary."

A representative of Omagh MC was presented with £1000 and a JLT Rose Bowl Trophy at the MSA Night of Champions ceremony at the Royal Automobile Club in London on 20 January 2012.

CAN TWINS TOWER OVER THE OPPOSITION?…

One of the early entries received by the organisers off the Rally Marketing Mid Wales Historic Stages, Newtown & District Automobile Club Ltd, has come from Phil & Mick Squires in their Ford Escort MkII. Having achieved great success in the 'modern' BTRDA Rally Series, winning the two-wheel drive Silver Star Championship in 2004, the Stoke-on-Trent twins moved across to the MSA British Historic Rally Championship several seasons ago. Their 2012 campaign will start in Newtown on 4th March but, in an entry thus far dominated by Escorts of various sorts, they know that they will have their work cut out!

Entered in a similar car and in the same class are Nick Elliott co-driver Dave Price, from Cheltenham, and the Squires brothers won't need reminding that Elliott won the Mid Wales Historic Stages outright in 2010 and then missed out by a mere second last year when Julian Reynolds (Haverfordwest) pipped him to the post!

The 2010 & 2011 MSA British Historic Rally Champions, David Stokes (Dursley) & Guy Weaver in their MkI Ford Escort RS1600, begin the defence of their title in Mid Wales, hoping for a repeat performance of last year when they won their category, opening their account in the series with a maximum score.
