YOUNG SCOTS RALLY ACE JOHN MacCRONE SIGNS OFF WITH FAST TIMES IN PORTUGAL

Posted: 31 Mar 2012 09:03 AM PDT

Scotland's rising young rally star, John MacCrone, threw off the disappointment of the opening day to post fourth-fastest times in the final two stages of the WRC Academy in Portugal.

The 22-year-old from the Isle of Mull received a 15 minute penalty after he crashed heavily on the opening gravel stage on Thursday evening.

But the Scot, making his debut in the WRC Academy driving his Tunnocks and Palletforce-backed Rally Team Scotland Ford Fiesta, was delighted with his performance today.

"This was a real baptism of fire," MacCrone, co-driven by Glasgow's Stuart Loudon, admitted. "We made one very, very small mistake on Thursday night, and that cost us big time."

Their mistake was taking crest just 3km/h too quickly. The result was the Fiesta ploughed nose first into the gravel ripping off the sumpguard and destroying the oil cooler.

"After that it was a case of fighting back, and I'm happy with the way we regrouped and applied ourselves," MacCrone continued.

"In the closing three stages today, we were seventh, fourth and fourth, so we know the pace is there. That's a major boost for me.

"This was always going to be a very steep learning curve and, but for that one little error on Thursday night, we could well have been pushing for a top three or four position today."

Indeed, but for their 15 minute penalty, the Scots duo would have finished fifth, possibly fourth, instead of ninth.

"We take a lot away from this event," MacCrone said. "We know we're fast enough to be competitive, but we also need to learn when to push and when to back off.

"I'd say we've learned that lesson the hard way. We've five rounds remaining and points now are going to be crucial.

"The next round is Greece, which is likely to be another real car-breaking rally like this one. We're ready for it."

Atkinson leads Brother International Rally of Whangarei overnight; Gilmour top Kiwi

Posted: 31 Mar 2012 03:12 AM PDT

Australian Chris Atkinson has a lead of nearly one minute over Swedish driver Per-Gunnar Andersson in the 2012 Brother International Rally of Whangarei after a day of lead changes and troubles for top contenders. New Zealander Emma Gilmour holds third place overall, just 0.3 seconds behind Andersson, showing the Kiwis are mixing with some top international drivers at the season opening rally.

Atkinson, driving a Skoda Fabia S2000 for Team MRF in the Asia Pacific Rally Championship category of the two-day rally, was seldom out of the top three all day as 47 competitors tackled 159.96 kilometres of special stages taking them from the Whangarei event base south to Maungaturoto and back to Whangarei for the overnight break.

Andersson, in his first start in this event, set the quickest time on stage one 'Parahi' to take the early lead, but in stage two the Proton driver suffered a puncture to drop back to ninth overall. Meantime Kiwi drivers Richard Mason, Emma Gilmour, Chris West and Kingsley Thompson – all contenders in the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship powered by Brother – took advantage of running on stages which had been swept clear of gravel by the 11-strong APRC field seeded in front of them. Top seed Alister McRae, Andersson's team-mate in a matching yellow Proton Satria Neo S2000, bore the brunt of the road-sweeping duties.

"We were clearing the road and struggling a bit," said McRae at the lunchtime service break. "We can't carry the speed through the corners as it's getting too sideways."

West took the overall lead in his Mitsubishi after stage two, with Gilmour and her Subaru joining West at the top of the leader-board after stage three before Atkinson's superior power in the S2000 Skoda saw the Australian move into second place. Thompson and Mason made up the top five after the morning's four stages, but then Mason, a three-time national champion, was out with rear differential problems.

By stage six, West's day was done – drive-train issues foiled the former national rally champion's bid for victory in this all-important opening round of the New Zealand Rally Championship – but he expects to restart on Sunday, as does Mason.

West's demise gave Atkinson the advantage he was looking for – one he held at the same point in this event last year when he went on to become the first international driver to win the Whangarei rally. Andersson continued to push on and eventually pipped Gilmour for second place by day's end by just 0.3 seconds.

When reviewing the day, Atkinson said: "We are coming to grips with the car and learning about that all the time as well, so we're improving as we go. Obviously the road position this morning hurt us but P-G is going quick so we have to watch out for him as he will be fast tomorrow. If you look at Emma in second place, she is doing a great job. Tomorrow's stages should be good for the car but we will be first on the road so I wouldn't mind a bit of rain tonight to dampen it down and get rid some of that loose gravel on top. Obviously the guys behind will have an advantage on the first pass."

Gilmour added her comments: "It's been a really solid day. Anthony and I had a good first day together. It was a shame to see Westy go out as he was going very fast. The car is handling so well now – it's got a really good setup, it's me getting confidence in that."

Breaking the field out into its key categories, Atkinson, Andersson and Atkinson's Team MRF Skoda team-mate Indian Gaurav Gill lead the APRC contenders. Gilmour, Thompson and Christchurch's Matt Jansen in his Subaru STI are the top NZRC contenders. Of note is another Christchurch driver Josh Marston who holds tenth position overnight. A Rally New Zealand Rising Stars 2WD junior scholarship recipient Marston is in a two-wheel-drive Ford Fiesta and is showing some fine pace among the faster turbo-charged and four-wheel-drive competitors.

The Brother International Rally of Whangarei continues with eight further stages on Sunday. The event is the opening round of the 2012 FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) and Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship (NZRC), powered by Brother. The event has attracted nearly 50 drivers from India, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, Sweden, United Kingdom, and New Caledonia as well as all over New Zealand. More detail and latest event news is available on the website www.rallywhangarei.co.nz.

Oliveira gets around the second day of Rally de Portugal

Posted: 31 Mar 2012 12:48 AM PDT

A constant rain, fog, and a slippery surface were the extra ingredients of the second day of the competition of Rally de Portugal, fourth round of the World Rally Championship. Early today many drivers had to cope with the same conditions, among them it was Daniel Oliveira with his Ford Fiesta WRC for the Brazil World Rally Team which counts on the Stohl Racing.

Oliveira started the day full of expectations and after completing two difficult Super Specials (SS5 and SS6) he kept a firm pace with the aim of completing the day. After running these Super Specials in the laison he was stuck with no chances of going back to the road. Some other drivers were involved in the same situation which blocked the road.

This situation forced the organizers to neutralize the second loop because of the chaos they caused. In the end, Daniel could go back to the Service Park on his own where the team worked hard so that the car would be ready for tomorrow. After this mishap, the Brazilian driver did not get any penalties and he could finish the day in the 12th position overall. After two days of competition, the leader of Rally de Portugal 2012 is the Finnish Mikko Hirvonnen (Citroen), with 1:20.01,7.

Tomorrow's Leg: The third day of the competition will move to the No rth of the Faro. There will be three Super Specials that will be repeated twice. This is the longest leg of the race with 148.16 kilometers.

British Rally Championship Round 2 Bulldog International Rally

Posted: 30 Mar 2012 03:07 PM PDT

A rather shorter rally than the organisers had planned, now 6 stages instead of 11 the Bulldog International Rally played host to round 2 of the British Rally Championship and once again both P&R Benn Ford Fiesta R2s where present at the event.

After a good result on Rallye Sunseeker the opening round of the BRC, Matthew Cathcart set out on the Welshpool based Bulldog Rally to prove he could challenge for the championship. With James Morgan guiding Matthew in the Ford Fiesta R2, the pair set 10th fastest time on the opening stage, beating more experienced rivals Alastair Fisher, Peter Taylor and Jussi Kumpumaki. Heading to service after SS5, Matthew had moved up to 8th overall. On the next stage Matthew remained 8th overall but on what would be the penultimate stage of the rally, SS7 saw Matthew drop nearly a minute with a rear puncture which put him now 13th overall. Stage 8 would be the last stage of the rally due to the organisers cancelling stages 9, 10 and 11 but Matthew couldn't make the time back so would finish a strong 13th overall and now proving to be a force to be reckoned with in the championship and the R2 class.

After coming close to winning the inaugural WRC Academy in 2011, Egon Kaur returned to the driving seat for the Bulldog Rally in the P&R Benn LHD Ford Fiesta R2. Since Wales Rally GB, Egon and navigator Erik Lepikson had done limited mileage so 14th overall on the first stage was a good start to build on throughout the day. By service Egon had moved up to 11th overall and with some minor changes made to the car, set out to gain a few more places before the day was out. A string of top ten times in the afternoon rewarded Egon with 9th overall on his first event of 2012 and first event in the BRC.

Paddon hampered in Portugal; will restart

Posted: 30 Mar 2012 02:54 PM PDT

Facing treacherous conditions on day two of Rally Portugal, Kiwi rally stars Hayden Paddon and John Kennard have had yesterday's strong start hampered by an electrical fault. Just 1.5 kilometres in the first stage, Paddon's Skoda stopped. However the New Zealanders will restart the rally for day three, Saturday, European time.

"We don't know the exact cause yet, but we will get the car fixed to rejoin tomorrow under SupeRally rules and therefore get valuable championship points," says Paddon.

"The scenes here in Portugal are unlike any other rally; three of today's six stages have been cancelled after a lot of overnight rain has caused the roads to be treacherous and many competitors have retired."

Paddon and Kennard finished day one of the three-and-a-half day event with a lead of nearly 25 seconds over closest rival Craig Breen, the current SWRC category leader.

Breen has now retired, leaving Saudi driver Yazeed Al Rajhi heading the SWRC category for Portugal. Paddon is now fourth in SWRC, but says "all is not lost yet".

Under the SupeRally regulations, Paddon will still appear on the results table – he will receive a stage time of the fastest competitor in the SWRC class plus five minutes.

Rally Portugal organisers have now cancelled half of the day two's stages for safety reasons due to the extreme wet weather.

For day three, Saturday, Paddon and Kennard will tackle a repeated loop of three stages. On Sunday there are six further stages with the final test, the power stage, sure to attract thousands of enthusiastic Portuguese fans.

Paddon's 2012 campaign is supported by PlaceMakers, Giltrap Group, Skoda, Cameron Sea and Airfreight, Granger Design, Castrol, Raiseys, New Balance, Pope Print, Racetech, Chicane Racewear, Endless Brake Pads, 1 Group web design and Brita Safety.

Araújo edges towards Top 10 goal

Posted: 30 Mar 2012 02:43 PM PDT

Armindo Araújo and co-driver Miguel Ramalho powered through the field today at Rally de Portugal, making up some of the time they lost due to yesterday's misfortunes. The WRC Team MINI Portugal duo started the day with their heads clear and still focused on taking a Top 10 finish. They made fantastic progress climbing the leaderboard from 32rd to 11th overall, even clocking a third fastest time overall on SS6.

It was a drama filled morning today at Rally de Portugal. The already treacherous stages were made even more challenging by the heavy rains which made it pure endurance for both drivers and cars. Focused on finding a good rhythm from the very beginning, Araújo never lost concentration and successfully navigated his MINI John Cooper Works WRC through the morning loop and safely came back to the Motorsport Italia service after a trouble free morning.

Due to continuing adverse weather conditions, the organisers of Rally de Portugal decided to cancel Section 4 of the event for safety reasons. Going into the third competitive day of the event, Araújo lies in 11th place overall, only 6.6 seconds behind 10th placed Jari Ketomaa.

Armindo Araújo: "This morning the conditions were quite challenging with fog, mud and rain on the stages. It was really slippery and very easy to make a mistake. We left this morning with the objective of making up some of the time we lost last night and everything went according to the plan. We found a good and consistent rhythm, we set some good times and we're now up to 11th place so very close to the Top 10, which is still our aim for Rally de Portugal. The rally is still very long and with these conditions anything can happen but I'm pretty confident at the moment. I'm very satisfied with my MINI and tomorrow we'll try to keep up the good work we did this morning. I'm very happy because I made my fans proud this morning, their support is essential to me and it's a huge boost of confidence."

SOL RALLY BARBADOS TARGETS REGIONAL FANS

Posted: 30 Mar 2012 05:25 AM PDT

Gill leads Barbados crews against regional rivals in Rally Trinidad

In a first for Caribbean motor sport, the Barbados Rally Club (BRC), organiser of Sol Rally Barbados 2012 (June 9/10), has partnered with Going Places Travel to launch a series of specially-tailored travel packages targeted at the hundreds of motor sport fans in the region. Inclusive of round trip airfare, all taxes and fees, hotel and rental car, prices for a three-night package start at just US $494.

The regional push is the final component of the BRC's overseas promotion to be announced. Supported by the island's private-sector Tourism Development Corporation (TDC), the programme also includes prize drives offered to the winners of the 2011 Roger Albert Clark Rally in the north of England and 2012 Rallye Sunseeker National in the south, while two marshals who work over the Easter weekend on the Donnelly Group Circuit of Ireland will also enjoy trips across the Atlantic.

BRC PRO Neil Barnard explained: "The promotion has two strands – first, we want to tap into the regional spectator market in a more structured way, by offering a better package than individuals might themselves negotiate. Second, and just as important, it will also give the Club and our partners in island tourism a better way to quantify the numbers travelling. We have pretty accurate figures for competitors, their teams and the media – more than 50 last year, for instance, representing around 300 tourist nights – but the spectator attendance has only been an estimate. Space is limited, so anyone wanting to take advantage of the promotion is advised to book early."

The packages, which are being advertised in print and electronic media across the region, offer travel from Antigua, Jamaica, St Vincent & The Grenadines and Trinidad & Tobago; they are available for either three or ten nights, with a choice of four hotels, three on the south coast, one on the west, with slight price variations. Hotel and rental car packages are also available. Full details of the promotion, which has been launched this week to coincide with Rally Trinidad, can be found at www.going-places.tv.

Duane Boodasingh of the popular trinituner.com web site in Trinidad added: "These travel packages are an excellent idea from the Barbados Rally Club. I can imagine the other legs, Rally Trinidad and Rally Jamaica, adopting similar packages in the future to create a truly cohesive Caribbean Rally experience in the region! Given the calibre of these events, it's Sport Tourism at its best!"

Gill leads Barbados crews against regional rivals in Rally Trinidad

Double Barbados Rally Club (BRC) Champion Driver Sean Gill represents Club and country this weekend (March 30-April 1) in Rally Trinidad. With regular co-driver Michael Cummins in the Simpson Motors/Shell V-Power/Automotive Art Suzuki SX4 WRC, he will be looking to start the Caribbean tour with a victory, after finishing second in RT for the past two years, also in RJ last December.

Along with Sol RB12 (June 9/10) and Rally Jamaica in December, Rally Trinidad makes up the 'Big Three' in regional rallying; while Barbados hosts a tarmac event, the other regional 'legs' are loose-surface, each with a distinctive character. So far, only Jamaica's Jeffrey Panton has won all three . . . and it took him 13 years to achieve that.

Six times the winner at home between 1994 and 2008, Panton won the BRC's premier event in 1998 – he was the first regional driver to do so – then ticked the final box in Trinidad last year at the wheel of his ex-Colin McRae Ford Focus WRC00. In terms of the 'Big Three', he has the best record – eight wins across the region - and his recent purchase of a Focus WRC06 suggests he could continue to be the man to beat.

Panton's fellow-countryman Gary Gregg is not far behind in the regional pecking order, with five wins in Jamaica since 2005, plus Barbados in '06. Armed now with a Focus WRC05, he is another target for Gill, along with Jamaica's John Powell (Subaru Impreza WRC S14), who rallies under the flag of his adopted home country, Trinidad & Tobago, where he has won three times – 2005, '06 & '10 – along with Jamaica last year.

Also in action from Barbados are James Betts in the ex-Kirk Watkins Group A Mitsubishi Lancer Evo V, Trevor Manning, who will drive Powell's Group N Evo X, and Harold Morley (Impreza N14).

Sol Rally Barbados and Shell V-Power King of the Hill are organised and promoted by the Barbados Rally Club, which celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2007; Sol RB12 is the 23rd running of the Club's annual International All-Stage Rally and marks the fifth year of title sponsorship by the Sol Group, the Caribbean's largest independent oil company.

Strong start for Paddon in Portugal

Posted: 30 Mar 2012 04:57 AM PDT

Hayden Paddon and John Kennard, New Zealand's top rally drivers, have come through the opening four stages of the Portuguese round of the World Rally Championship leading their category by nearly 25 seconds.

The Kiwis, the reigning production world champions, are contesting Vodafone Rally de Portugal this weekend as their second round of the Super 2000 World Rally Championship.

Paddon trailed current SWRC category leader Irishman Craig Breen following the opening super special stage in the streets of Portugal's capital Lisbon, but moved in front on the first all-gravel night stage. Driving a Skoda Fabia S2000 Paddon's advantage over Breen is 24.6s going into tomorrow's six stages.

"We have had a good start to the rally here in Portugal after tonight's four stages," said Paddon from the service park at the Algarve stadium in the south of Portugal. "We are currently leading SWRC by 25 seconds and are ninth overall."

Paddon added: "We did take a gamble with tyres tonight, choosing to take the soft compound tyres for the shorter, night stages with rain forecasted. However, the conditions were dryer than we expected, and after damaging our tyres in the opening tarmac super special stage in Lisbon, we had two badly-worn tyres on the rear, and good tyres on the front. We did lose some time with the tyres moving around a lot but it wasn't too bad and the times were still good."

Paddon and Kennard tackle new stages on Friday. "These will certainly be challenging as they are more technical and rougher than stages which are typically used in Rally Portugal. The weather will also play a part tomorrow as showers have been falling tonight which will make tyre decisions crucial."

Then on Saturday, the Kiwis face stages with a format unchanged from 2011 – the same three stages are run twice.

Oliveira experienced a full day of emotions in his return to WRC in Portugal

Posted: 30 Mar 2012 04:50 AM PDT

Brazil WRT's Daniel Oliveira cleared safely a treacherous start on Rally de Portugal's opening leg by placing his Ford Fiesta WRC serviced by Stohl Racing in 16th position after a long and exhausting first day of action.

Activities of this FIA World Rally Championship's fourth round began quite early with a series of promotional events prior to the Lisbon's Super Special stage with which Rally de Portugal finally started out during the afternoon. "It was nice to get together with most of the people with which I spent many days last year and experienced the spectacular atmosphere of the W RC" expressed the 26 year-old Brazilian driver.

Oliveira and his co-driver Carlos Magalhaes were 19th fastest through a tricky 3.27km street test tackled in gravel wheels. "It was a nice way to start this rally since there were tons of fans on the streets and I had a first good feeling with the car" said Daniel.

They didn't have much time to enjoy the cheering of the crow as they hit back the road soon again to drive more than 200km to face afterwards three real speed gravel stages run in the dark on their way back to the Service Park at Algarve Stadium.

The first special stage of this new section started at 8 pm and visibility was quite an issue of discussion during the whole week. The thr ee-minute gap between each car on the road ensured dust didn't affect the drivers running in the dark; however, road conditions were very difficult as it started to rain quite heavily during late afternoon "We ran in very difficult and slippery conditions" explained Oliveira.

Daniel set a cautious but steady pace which paid him off since the Brazilian took advantage some of the rival's problems to climb three positions and finished 16th overall. "Today we did something of what we came to do here" stated Daniel. "We didn't take any risks and ran wisely through these stages. The objective was to finish the day and tomorrow we will try to improve our pace tomorrow".

Tomorrow's route. Although this is the first event Daniel and Carlos are repeating since they star ted competing within the World Rally Championship last year, tomorrow's route will be a completely new challenge for BWRT crew members.

After a slightly delayed start owing to the late finish tonight (the first stage of the day starts at midday), competitors will head to Tavira, -a popular touristic resort 30km to the East of Faro- for the first time since 2007, for three repeated stages.

BWRT Ford Fiesta WRC Nº9 stage times

SS 1 19° + 9.4s / 19° overall
SS 2 17° + 44.1 /17° overall
SS 3 16° + 1:05.3 / 16° overall

Great start to Rally Portugal for Reeves

Posted: 30 Mar 2012 04:44 AM PDT

Brendan Reeves and Rhianon Smyth have had a great start to the opening round of the 2012 WRC Academy season, winning the first stage and finishing the day in second place, just 0.5 seconds off the lead.

The Aussie duo started their WRC season on a high, winning the Super Special Stage in Lisbon in front of a huge crowd. Crews then headed 200km for the first of three gravel stages. Reeves drove consistently, setting good stage times, and is really happy with his position at the end of Day One.

"We've had a good day," Reeves said. "There was no dust tonight like we all thought there might be. SS2 was actually a bit damp and slippery over the rocky surface but SS3 was dry.

"We made some small mistakes on SS4 with some late braking and slowing at the first finish boards, but overall we are very happy with our day.

"The car was great, and it was fantastic to be back competing in the WRC again," he added.

Day two of Rally Portugal consists of three stages each run twice. The rocky roads are expected to make conditions tough, particularly on the second pass during the afternoon.

Araújo Unphased by First Day Hiccough

Posted: 30 Mar 2012 04:37 AM PDT

WRC Team MINI Portugal No.1 driver Armindo Araújo and co-driver Miguel Ramalho successfully completed the first day at Rally de Portugal despite facing a rough start to the event.

The day got underway with the Lisbon Super Special Stage - run beside the Jerónimos Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site - where thousands of fans gathered to cheer on national hero Araújo. On the 3.27km Tarmac stage, the Portuguese driver set the 7th fastest time overall, only 4.3 seconds behind stage winner Petter Solberg.

Three competitive night stages followed and were made even more challenging by the rain. Araújo was determined to make a cautious start trying to find a good rhythm but unfortunately a mistake in the pace notes made his MINI John Cooper Works WRC slide off the road 1km into SS2 costing him nearly 5 minutes. However, the Portuguese fans, never to let their hero down, turned out in force to help the crew get their MINI back on the road and in the competition.

Refusing to lose his focus, Araújo tackled SS3 with consistency, clocking the 10th time overall 37.7 seconds off stage winner Jari-Matti Latvala. Despite losing more time due to a cloudburst which soaked the first part of SS4, he is now looking for a fresh start tomorrow.

Armindo Araújo: "The support from my home crowd has been as fantastic as ever and the atmosphere in Lisbon was incredible. We made a mistake at the beginning of SS2 - we had a wrong pace note and the MINI slid off the road 1km into the stage. We were pushed back on the road by spectators but unfortunately we lost about 4 minutes 30 seconds. That is rally though and these things can happen. We'll start afresh tomorrow and we'll do our best to win back some of the time we lost. Of course I'm a bit disappointed but the rally is still very long and anything can happen. Our MINI didn't have any problems after we went off and I'm pleased with its performance."

The second day of Rally de Portugal will feature six special stages - three run twice - around the Tavira area, covering 132.68km. The action starts at 11.00 when the cars leave the Algarve Stadium for another long day battling on the Portuguese gravel.
